June Countryfile Magazine features double page spread of my Crantock Beach photograph

One of my favourite Cornwall photos is featured as a double page spread on the very prominent pages 6 & 7 of the June issue of Countryfile Magazine. The shot from Crantock Beach in Cornwall was taken a couple of years ago on a beautiful early summer's evening looking out down over the beach with the tide two thirds of the way out exposing the huge sandy beach.

Winter Photography in the Cairngorms National Park

I spent 4 days last week up in the Cairngorms with friends staying in Aviemore, this was mainly a trip to catch up with friends and ski at Cairngorm Mountain but I did manage to get the camera out on a couple of occasions to capture the beautiful snowy winter landscapes. This blog post features the best of the images from the trip including shots from Loch Morlich, Cairngorm Mountain itself and the nearby Loch Garten.

On Christmas morning I made my way down to beach with grey skies and expecting not many opportunities for seascape photographs but the sky soon turned and the sunrise was spectacular with lovely direct light and colour int he sky. Below is a sideshow of the best images from the morning.

Looking back at 2013 – A review of photography trips and favorite photographs

It seems to be a theme these days to do a review of the previous year once we have entered the new year. 2014 is looking to be a busy year with lots of trips planned including a 2 week tour of Iceland along with trips to Ireland and back to the Scottish Highlands. 2014 will also be the year that I take on more freelance work (both landscape and digital imaging/marketing work) so plan to dedicate more time to the business side of my photography and continue on the growth within 2013.

North Tyneside Coastal Photographs and Viewpoints

During my time in Newcastle I made many early morning trips to the glorious North Tyneside coastline, the beaches are some of the best so close to any city in the UK. Running from the mouth of the Tyne up to Whitley bay the coastline forms a photographers playground with rocky outcrops, man made harbors and piers, the historic Tynemouth priory, glorious sandy beaches and to top it off the famous St Mary’s Lighthouse just north of the beaches at Whitley Bay.

Landscape Photography at Wast Water and Wasdale Head in the Lake District

Wasdale is has a very different feel to many areas of the Lake District and is different in many ways, the difficulty in accessing the area means that there are far few visitors than to other parts of the Lakes making it an unspoilt naturally beautiful area with a great sense of escape. You can walk around the hills and valleys here and see very few people (the exception being the main paths and climbs to Scafell).

Understanding camera histograms and the importance of shooting to the right

The histogram is a tool in most DLSR cameras and photo editing software which at a basic level shows you a graph of the range on tones throughout your photograph. The term 'Shooting to the right' gets thrown around photography forums usually without any kind of information or guidelines showing what this actually is and why it is such a useful thing to know. The technique of shooting to the right is incredibly useful when you are hoping to get the absolutely best quality in the RAW file

A few days in Paris - travel photography from my recent trip

I recently had the opportunity to spend a few days in Paris as part of a weeks holiday to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. I managed to get by with my little Panasonic TZ8 and a handy Gorilla pod bendy tripod and managed to get a few shots in among the thousand of other tourists and photographers all aiming for similar spots. The buildings in Paris are beautiful, the architecture and history is truly amazing.
