Scotlands Answer to Route 66 - NC500 - Photographing the Northern Highlands

During the middle of June I spent a week on holiday touring the beautiful north of Scotland. For this trip we decided to head further north than normal to explore new areas of the highlands including Wester Ross and Sutherland. We split the week between locations with the first half spent with friends near to Gairloch and the second a 3 night stay in Ullapool allowing us to explore further up the coast. Although this was more of a holiday rather than a photography trip I still managed to capture a few images that I am happy with without going out for the usual sunrise/sunset trips. Shooting during the day is technically very different to my usual landscape photography workflow & procedures.

Many of the locations on this trip feature on the route of the newly created NC500 which is a stunning 500 mile drive around the coastline of Scotland running past some amazing locations. Many of the tourists in the area were following the route in their cars, campervans and bikes with glowing reports of the areas they had passed that day.

The following images are my top picks from a very enjoyable trip. The locations we visited and spent time at were incredibly beautiful. The northern highlands are definitely a location I will be returning to on a more dedicated photography trip, when I will revisit some of these locations at better times of day to capture the stunning light I have previously enjoyed in other areas of Scotland.
