Newquay
There's something about Newquay. Having been multiple times I just love it and there's nothing you can say to make me think otherwise. The last time I was there I stood trying to see it with fresh eyes, as if it was the first time I've ever visited, and I was startled to discover that some of it is a little bit grotty, a little tired. Yet I still love it, it's like the wine you have on holiday whilst enjoying the sunset and believing it really is the best thing you ever tasted. It's everything leading up to that moment that renders it so delicious. The friends you camped with. The BBQs. The nights out in the terrible bars that ended with raucous dancing and painful hangovers. The squeals as the cold water hits you your first time bodyboarding. The delicious pizza. Your first surfing lesson. The first time you managed to catch a wave. The beautiful beaches and the golden sand between your toes. Walking in the sand dunes. Kite surfing. Newquay can offer you all of this plus decent weather and stunning coastline.
Fistral beach, Newquay's famous beach, is hugely popular with surfers. Whether or not you surf it's still a beautiful beach and there are shops, cafes and other facilities on the seafront. Festivals and events are also held throughout the year on the beach itself.
A short walk from town is the gorgeous viewpoint of Pentire head overlooking the beautiful blue waters of the Gannel Estuary and Crantock beach. Please be aware that the Gannel is tidal. Crantock beach is an absolute must. To access it there is a path that leads down to the estuary and at low tide you can use the footbridge to the beach free of charge. There is a ferry at high tide that charges a small fee. Crantock beach is a vast sandy beach and even has sand dunes for you to explore.
